One March day in Ayr - about 15 years ago - the teenage daughter of folks we were visiting rushed inside to tell us there were coloured lights moving all over the sky.

We went outside to see what she was talking about, and witnessed the most amazing sight. Patches of emerald green, brilliant blue and shocking pink were moving all round the sky - in every direction!

The local radio station said reports were coming in from everywhere, someone suggesting that the Americans had let go of many coloured gas-filled balloons, so they would burst high up in the atmosphere and they'd be able to track air movement at night!

The next morning I phoned the Met. Office at Glasgow Airport, to be told that one of the best sightings of The Northern Lights ever to be seen in SW Scotland had been reported from places as far south as the Solway!

We wished we'd had a video camera handy. I'm sure it would have recorded the spectacle. However, we'll never forget the night the sky lit up in colour! (Our sister-in-law's pics of the Aurora Borealis in Alaska didn't match our experience!
