The RSPB: Big Garden Birdwatch: Results 2011
It's funny - headlines were all about the small bird population increasing.. yet when I did my watch I recorded fewer that usual That's not to say that there are fewer, just that they all buggered off when I did mine!!
All this winter is has been a case of more species visiting the garden, but fewer of the more common ones.
e.g. We have had fewer Greenfinches, Goldfinches, Wrens and Great Tits, yet we've had 3 Blackcaps (first time here), 5 Siskins and 2 Bullfinches call daily, while we also had short visits from Waxwings (first time), Redwings and a couple of Fieldfares. Three House Sparrows called throughout the colder spell as well, and we had a few visits from one or two Starlings.
Re. Larger species, we've also witnessed a Grey Heron next to the pond and a Buzzard on our Oak tree - but they didn't call while I was doing the GGBW count!
Yesterday the Bullfinches and Siskins were still there, and a male and a female Blackcap were enjoying fatballs and bananas!
