Captured at Charvil
I think you've got a Male Common Blue there - it's the orange blobs on the underwing that does it - a Small Blue has just a line of black dashes.
Cracking shots Joe
Just got my other book out and he looks like a Silver-Studded Blue Judging by the underwing. We'll wait for the experts to decide. Why can't all books show the exact colour and top & bottom markings
Here is a good guide Joe :0

Looking at the links, I think Louise is right.
It is hard Joe.
I am not an expert, but I've spent so much time this year looking up creatures that I am learning quite a lot It seems to me that although colour shade can vary between individuals, the patterning is fairly reliable (but I am happy to be corrected!). Also, the males and females can look quite different.
The nice thing about the "UK Butterflies" website is that has a number of shots of variations, and also a "similar species" tab - both of which help considerably in confirming.
Luckily the butterflies are relatively limited in number, thus relatively easy to narrow down with a bit of work, but I have a lot of insect shots that I've not posted because I've not worked out what they are yet... but I WILL work it out (she says, optimistically)
...oh yes, and nice shots (the old brain finally kicks in and realises that it hasn't pointed that out yet )
