Certainly a good colony of Tufted Ducks on the lake at the moment, here's a picture of a female and one of many small groups.

The Scaup often attach themselves to any groups of Tufted Duck Rolf, always pays to check this out every time you see the 'Tufty'. We have had up to four this winter commuting between two pools and still around as I write but will soon be departing along with many other winter visitors to their breeding grounds.

I didn't know that Pete, a real novice on water fowl, will have to check back on all of my photos to see if I have confused them or missed any which were there.

Excellent idea to re-check you photos Rolf and an interesting project which may well turn up the 'goods'.

The drake has a pale grey mottled back and the female is very much like the 'tufty' but has a distinct white blaze at the base of the bill. Both are slightly bulkier than the 'tufty' but thats not all that obvious to the casual eye. Neither has a 'tuft'.

    Good Hunting!

    Pete.

Well hopefully I will be back there next week when Beryl comes up to the area Pete, I have today joined the local club, so we should have access to the two hides as well. I will also be taking the big lens and teleconverter, plus my cheapo spotting scope, it's a cheap ebay one, but seems to do the job.
