I've never seen one of these, and apparently they spend a lot of time up the top of the trees, so it sounds like you were lucky. Mind you, since it's Latin name (Favonius quercus) includes the word for Oak, it it quite appropriate that you were under an Oak when you saw it:-)

Yes I often wondered it there might be a colony of Purples at the top of two Oaks close to each other.
They normally come down to feed in the early morning and just before dusk . This one decided to have lunch as well
