I have been inside caves at Rouffignac and other places near Lascaux where there are many wonderful paintings on the walls. From mere hand prints - and daubing round a hand shape - to wonderful animals and hunting scenes - these are surely amonsgst the world's wonders!

Some of those are quite spectacular, I may be heading to the South of France next August, so may have to hire a car and visit some of them.

We've seen some in the Lot Valley, Rolf, with rivers travelling through the caves, and some wonderful stalagmites and stalactites in them too.

However, the best we saw were in the Dordogne area, though there are many wonderful ones between there and the Pyrenees.

Can recommend Padirac and Pechmerle;
Grottes et gouffre du Lot and Centre de Prhistoire de Pech Merle (46330 Cabrerets, France)

For ones without loads of cave art, but an amazing experience, the Grottes de Betharram (near Lourdes) take some beating!
