When the Shuttle Endeavour launched on May 16th

on STS-134 mission there were clouds at 5000 feet,
and the clouds were at least 500 feet thick.

Folks on ground could see the Shuttle for only 22 seconds
before it vanished into the clouds.

But someone sent me this picture taken above the clouds.

Most planes are based at Hurn (Bournemouth) Airport for the duration, and you should be able to see them from the road nearby, but some may come straight from Southampton, or their bases elsewhere. Some approach the display zone by flying over the town, but others appear from the Isle of Wight area. In fine weather, and good binoculars, there is normally a decent view from Christchurch, Highcliffe or Barton cliffs.

(For the last 4 years, the Red Arrows have flown directly over our house at some point during the show - really noisy!)
