These were taken in the Killhope lead mine forest. The mine has long since ceased to be operational,however weardale council had the foresight to run it as a working Museum.Its about 1500 feet above sea level in the North Pennines.
Wow superb pics of the red squirrel digidark, I've never seen a pic of one on a feeder before. Do they eat as much as they grey...............no nothing can eat as much as the grey surely.gif "Big Grin")
Up until my visit to Killhope I had never seen a Red Squirrel. The staff at the museum feed them every other day. Sadly the area isnt big enough to be classed as a reserve but again the staff appear to be doing a fine job of protecting them.I have a short video taken at the same time. Chocky persuade me to put it on you tube, I havent figured out how to put it on this sight yet.
Good on the staff at the museum. Rolf or Chocky will point you in the right direction for putting the video on the site it would be lovely to see. I haven't a clue how to do it. I have taken a video of the birds in my garden and I haven't got as far as being able to play them back on my computer yet.
Chocky helped me with the uploading of my pics Babs, I am sure she will do the same with the video (pretty please Chocky)
I am pleased you like the pics....I suffered for a week after taking them....the squirrels ate the nuts,the midges ate me.

Great photos digidark, can't remember having ever seen a Red Squirrel, but will make a point of visiting one of the reserves in the near future.

They really are beautiful creatures Rolf. On a info plaque on the Killhope site it says that in 1940 65% of the country had Red Squirrels now its around 10%, mainly in the North and of course in Scotland. Tis very sad really

They are beautiful.have a short clip in the wildlife video section taken at same time.Was pleased with the result and was well worth all the midge bites I got
Blinkin' midges. According to a gardening website I visit, there is an Avon skin cream that keep them away... and the army uses it!!! A number of posters say that it has worked for them:
"Skin So Soft dry oil body spray in the green container" i.e. the woodland smelling one. You can get Avon online now, so not having an Avon lady isn't a problem.
