Exbury Butterflies - on 16-08-10

The herbaceous borders in Exbury's sundial gardens were alive with insect life.

Here are a few of the Butterflies we captured on camera!

Firstly the Comma (1, 2 and 3)



Then the Red Admiral (4 and 5)



Followed by a Silver-washed Fritillary, ragged with wear (6, 7 and 8)




The Silver-washed Fritillary and the Red Admiral (9)



And a small blue Butterfly (10)




There were white Butterflies as well, although the commonest were the Commas!

LOL - I do try to tell Rolf how wonderful he is, but it just gets sort of mangled and comes out as "You're an idiot"... don't know why

As for the shots, Catherine - fantastic! What a lovely selection of butterflies you got to see, although some are pretty battered.

Everybody's 'doing' butterflies or bees just now. Bournemouth had a special selection of plants for them in early summer, and Gardeners' World devoted a good deal of their time to such insects this week.

Still lots of white ones flying around, Not sure which type as they won't stop fluttering for me to see a wing pattern. Still some Brimstone ones in the garden (and conservatory) and small blue ones are pretty regular. Not seen any Painted Lady ones yet this year. They were the commonest for us last year.

I think that the Painted Ladies were generally showing themselves everywhere last year... the brazen hussies!

Although the aim of my garden is grow veg (and it's small), I do ensure that my garden has quite a bit for insects, butterflies and bees from very early Spring to very late Autumn - had loads of bees & hoverflies but few butterflies.
