The Damselfly seemed to think that the lack of movement of this dead one constituted willingness. I thought that it may have been a one-off, but further along I saw the same thing but this time with a number of males all vying for her attention.... without a lot of luck

Yes, they are obviously not too bright, or are perhaps attracted by colour only.
