    The Vyne, Basingstoke

    It's a National Trust property, but, even if you're not a Trust member, and don't care about old, historic houses, it's a wonderful way to spend the day watching wildlife or visiting the gardens.

    The Vyne - Things to see & do - National Trust

    There's a pleasant café, with outdoor seating for warmer days, but, as is normal in Trust properties, prices are high and the choice is limited, so it's worthwhile taking along your own picnic to enjoy at the water's edge!

    The Bird hide;
    A new bird hide overlooks the wetlands at the far end of the estate. It is well- equipped with info on all of the birds to be found at The Vyne, plus several pairs of binoculars for anyone to use.

    Wildlife and flowers;

    We didn’t see any mammals when we were there, but it is certain that Foxes, Badgers and smaller rodents would find food and a home in the grounds.

    There were many Bumblebees, several Bee Flies, and other insects. Brimstone Butterflies and others flitted around as we walked. We managed to capture this Comma Butterfly on camera!

    Primroses and Daffodils brightened up the meadows, while wild Wood Anemones, wild Violets and other wildflowers were dotted around the woodland.

    Other info..

    Beside the lake are the massive pumps which lifted water into the house, to the farm and to the brewery.

    Near the wetlands end of the lake is an old Victorian sluice gate.

    A great deal of work is being done just now to lay a hard path at the side of the lake away from the house.

    In the walled garden, Thrive, a charity which employs disabled adults, is helping restore original features.

    Lots of ‘living willow’ features are to be found there and in the parklands.

    Hens are in a wonderful pen, so everyone can see how they live and provide eggs

    The greenhouse is up and running, fruit trees are doing well – with sticky ‘ant trap’ bands on the trunks to stop those little insects ruining the crop.

    There are several lovely woodland walks at the far side of the lake.

    You should stop and read the info re. their eco toilets near the entrance – fascinating recycling!

    All-in-all, worth a visit, don't you think?

    And finally - some pics to show the new pathway being constructed and the massive benefit that will give to walkers and wildlife-watchers alike!

    Thanks, Rolf!

    Wasn't sure where to put it as there is such a variety of things to see and do there!
