    Default Iceland waterfalls

This is Skogarfoss on the south coast of Iceland. As you can see you can walk right up to the bottom of it! (I did and I got SOAKED )

Apparently if you are very lucky you can see a glint of Viking treasure behind the spray curtain

This place was incredibly beautiful and with the sun shining over our shoulders as we faced the falls there were rainbows EVERYWHERE! We found one place where there were perfectly circular rainbows curving out from our feet Sadly far too much spray around to take any pics - (we didnt want to wreck the cameras!)

This monster is the biggest waterfall in Europe. Its Dettifoss up in the north east of Iceland, and has a 45m drop. You can just see a couple of people standing on the skyline over on the right for a sense of scale. We went and sat right up close and its a phenominal experience seeing all that water flowing past. The previous day we had driven along the main road and seen a massive spray plume above it - from 10 miles away!

If you look over to the right of the pic you can see loads of smaller falls running down the rock face - thats not seperate falls - thats just from the spray!

This fan shaped beauty is Dynjandi up in the north western fjords, and is reached by bumpy gravel roads....

Some great waterfalls there Ross, well worth suffering the high beer prices.

Detifoss is an absolute nightmare to get into and out of. Theres a good road around the north eastern coast, then you turn onto a gravel road for 25km down to the falls. This one isnt too bad, so youy see the waterfall and decide to drive down the main road 25km to the south. BIG mistake - its the roughest road Ive ever been on. It took us an hour and a half to drive 25km (13 miles) mainly in first gear and second...... At several points I was actually getting concerned about shaking bits off the hire car!

They say if you drive fast enough the car skips over the corrugations in the gravel (imagine driving for miles over an old fashioned washboard) Well thats the theory, but you would shake your fillings loose trying to get up to that magic speed!

Living in Health & Safety obsessed Britain, Iceland really was a breath of fresh air. Look at the pic of Gulfoss in, post 2 - Note the path down to the top of the falls.

Now look at this picture and the note the Icelandic safety rail!

Yes there is a solitary rope at knee level to stop you falling over a 150ft cliff!

There was NOTHING to stop you falling into the water above the main fall - the pic with Carol in it clearly shows the end of the safety rope!!
