Ashgill Force waterall near Alston

This was a new discovery for us on the recent trip to Alston. We have been visiting this area for nearly 20 years, and been over this bridge dozens of times. We were told about Ashgill a while ago and have been meaning to stop and have a look so this time we did.

And isnt it lovely there?? Im really glad we stopped for an hour. Hard to believe there was a lead mine near the waterfall 150 years ago!

Simple - as usual we were trying to fit in enough to last about a week and we were only there for a long weekend

Other half Carol is a flower fairy (botanist) and loves to see all the rare flowers so we explore as many sites as possible

And to be honest it really wasnt very warm in the Pennines on that day.

The whole of the North Pennines from Alston to Middleton in Teesdale and across the watershed back to Alston is absolutely gorgeous. If you like wild areas with not too many people around, and lots of industrial archaeology to explore then this area is for you. And some of the pubs are pretty good as well.

And of course the flowers are fabulous in May / June - I know a field of yellow which you would think are buttercups but when you stop and look closer they are globeflowers.
