    Default Flying Ant time again!

Monday was a very warm and muggy day.

Suddenly, the noise of myriads of Gulls circling at speed above - Gull cries | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
told us that Ants were taking to their Nuptial flight! - Nuptial flight - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Round about a bird bath, lots of Ants were suddenly appearing! The tiny workers dwarfed by the larger, winged insects.
Winged ants 2 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! (Sorry about the shake here. I took a much better one, but the telephone rang in the middle of it. Then, after the few minutes the caller spoke, the Ants had all disappeared! That's how quickly it happens!)

Below is a view of the Gulls in the sky - unusual here as I think we are 3 to 4 miles from the sea. Amongst them were Black Headed, Herring Gulls and possibly some Lesser Black Backed Gulls. The noise was deafening as they rose to catch the escaping insects in their beaks. They obviously find them a delicacy!

Speak for yourself, Rolf - the ones in my garden were out of the nest on the 24th and gone by the 25th July. I got a few close-ups and will post some later.... I lost them until I went to France:-)

i have had the same experience with these flying ants and they are quite annoying since they really tend to flock up my garden sometimes although i guess it is part of nature's beauty. i do love it sometimes too when insects have their way of showing how they survive and thrive our environment. they are harmless to us anyway so i just let them be.
