Default Goldfinch & Dandelion- Carduelis carduelis

Ok, not the clearest of photos but I was waiting for the bus to go to work when I saw through the glass (well, plastic), 2 birds taking advantage of the Dandelions decimated by the grass cutting. It just seemed so unusual.
This one was only 10 or 12 feet away, but since I was so much in view I couldn't either get closer or clearer.

You can just see a bit of Dandelion hanging out of the beak.

Yes they love those and thistle seeds, was out yesterday and could hear a couple of them singing on aerial masts, lovely little song.

Yes - apparently they have been caught and caged for their song.

(The Victorians used to keep them in cages for their song - as well as their beauty. Really sad though!)

    Good capture, Louise!

I was really proud when we had so many Goldfinches visiting us in Ayr - until I googled and found that they were attracted to wasteland - with thistles, teasel, etc. Examples given were railway embankments and the like,

The cheek! To think they thought our garden was a wasteland!

Actually, I caught them eating lavender seeds once - so they have a taste for the more upmarket as well!
