Some interesting shots there Joe, quite amazing how many grasshoppers and crickets can be in a relatively small area of grass.

Eddy, you should be able to get almost macro shots with your 100-400 set to give a reasonable size subject in the viewfinder. I've use a 70-200 like that.
Hey, Eddie - you should start with one of the macro filters (or close up filter) - about 15-20 quid and give reasonable results (assuming you can get close enough to the creature of course). That's what I've been using on most of my insect shots this season (x10 filter). They may not be the crystal clear that you might get from a proper macro lens- but even if you eventual get a proper lens, due to the size, a filter can be kept with you when you don't expect to need the macro.. but want to be prepared. I believe that the Hoya ones are the better quality one, but the cheaper one I have seems to work for me.
...although using a nice sharpening program helps
