Just captured this pair of Goldfinch as one takes off

That's interesting Chocky how can you tell the difference between the male and female, I've never noticed a difference before

Well if you look at the female the red doesn't quite go as far as the corner of the eyes. The male's red patch goes further and the red on the male goes a bit further under the chin and the female is a little lighter in body colour.
Here is a pair . They are the only members of the Finch family where both male and female are similar in colour all other finches the female is mostly brown.

P.S. I watched this pair for ages building there nest and gathering the materials
