Hovering Hover-fly: Syrphus ribesii - Family: Syrphidae

Managed to capture one. Not easy and takes a lot of patience.
I believe this one is the Syrphus ribesii .It is difficult to see

I really can't say really as it would be any opportunity in between snapping birds etc and I might be out for 4-5 hour at a time. I was out for 5 hours on Monday walking about 7-8 miles up on the cliffs

Annoyingly, yesterday I was in a bus shelter and one was hovering about (and it landed), and IF I had had my camera I could probably have caught it - it was glass-roofed so it hovered at the roof. I was gutted!!! Anyway, well done for getting it. I wouldn't say you were mad however long you took to do it, it's a good capture.
