Coatis are a group of omnivores in the raccoon family. They spend a large part of the day foraging for insects, with their sensitive and flexible noses pressed to the ground. Their diet is supplemented with seasonal fruits such as figs when available. All three species of coati are good climbers, and use their long tails for balancing. They are common and widespread in central and South America, across habitats ranging from dry desert to humid forest. Females and the young form social groups called bands and when the young males reach maturity they are aggressively driven out to live a solitary life.
