PS. like the photos Louise, would help with identification, but I'll be damned if I can find my spider book.
I would have to look up the information, but the two types of Spider mentioned were a False Widow (female more apt to cause a visit to hospital for us) and a type of Funnel (or Tube) Web Spider, found in amongst the heather of the New Forest (for example).
I'm almost certain it was Chris Packham who talked about them on TV - though cannot be sure!

Wow, that's scary Catherine.
I do tend to avoid contact with spiders partly due to the fact that I don't want them running off up my arm and disappearing and getting squashed, but also a lingering wariness of them even though I know it's silly..... maybe it's not that silly?
