    Heres a different view - the concrete thing is the remains of the apparatus for loading whinstone onto ships for export for road building in the early 1900's so is of historical interest in itself.

    LOL, sounds about par for the course.

    I would guess that all of the stone missing from the top is now embedded in lots of local properties and walls.

    Probably Rolf - it was badly dameaged during the War of the Roses and was never repaired. 600 years of Northumbrian storms has wrecked what the war left behind.
