As often happens, couldn't quite get the focus and didn't have the ISO set fast enough, but it catches the bird with the nest building material at least.

I keep my ISO and white balance on auto my pics on fine and my shutter speed on the fstest and rappid. Mt manuel says action/sport is the fastes shutter speed. That way at leest one shot out of a douzen may come out reasonable
Not so easy with the 50-500 when hand held, I like and need a little more control than the auto settings give me, particularly when used at the longest focal length, the biggest problem is keeping the monster still.
Should think that is very heavy
Thing is on manual focus the subject has gone by the time I get focused.
I had a 80-300mm macro lens sigma but every thing was out of focus except macro, they were fasntastic shots, then a concrete slope on the estuary came up and smashed into my arm and killed my lens. Insurance said I wasn't insured. so now have to save up for a new one won't get sigma though it may fit the Nikon but doesn't work to well with it.
Yes, they are not the best on auto focus, unless you can near fill the frame with the subject, so I mostly use manual.
