reading ladylouises thread on clever crows, brought to mind something i witnessed earlier this year. whilst aimlessly gazing out of my back window, something caught my eye on a neighbouring chimney stack. three carrion crows perched on the t.v. aerials on the house to the rear of my house.
one of the crows appeared to have hold of something. i quickly grabbed my bins and found to my astonishment, that the crow was using the crossmember of the aerial as a dining table. the crow had taken the carcass of a collared dove up onto the aerial and had hung it over, whilst feeding.
the crow was using the aerial as a tool to hold the carcass whilst keeping it up safe from other prospective diners. many times i have seen crows feeding on carrion at the sides of roads, but never seen anything like this.
i wonder if the crow had previously had a near miss with a car at the roadside, then thought there's got to be a safer way to do this???
has anyone seen any other behavior like this?
i've had a go at shrinking a picture of the crow to send it in. hope it works
regards andrew.
