    Yes, an alternative name is Green Plover and of course Peewit, which is what I used to know them as when a kid.:0

    Way back in my New Forest days, I too used to call them Peewits.....or.....Hornpipes. Does anyone else recall using that name? I can't find any reference to it at all now....maybe I'm having a senior moment, but that's what we used to call them.

    That second shot is superb, Joe!

    We always called them 'Pee-wits' in Scotland when I was young, Bob. 'Lapwings' was the 'posh' (or English) name for them! Never called them 'Hornpipes' though, and not even heard of that one.

    I'm quite sure you remember it correctly though, and it's sad that those old names for birds are seldom heard these days. A Song Thrush was always a 'Mavis' when I was a child and my great uncle (born in 1870), always called a lark a 'Laverock'!
