If I'm correct with this being a Common Darter is there an easy way of separating it from its similar relatives.

Yes The Ruddy Darter has all black legs
The common Darter has cream and brown legs

Great shot Pete, missed it.
I find that one good difference to spot between the Common and the Ruddy Darter is the body shape, the Ruddy being much thinner in the middle.
