Tapping tree with stick, woodpecker call

Have tried this before with little success, but tried it last Monday on my last day in France and it worked too well.

The reason I say too well, is that the Great-spotted Woodpecker kept coming to the tree I was tapping, so I was unable to get any photos.

He did eventually however move to a tree slightly further away, so it wasn't all in vain.

What a great idea, I'd not heard of the either, Catherine. But trust the little blighter to still make it difficult for you

I heard it on one of the nature programmes, perhaps Springwatch or similar, but was impressed at how well it worked. I think it is probably more effective in the breeding season.
