Since my oregano took over a large patch of my front garden, I have had loads of these tiny micro moths hanging about the herbs.

Just a comment to say that after thinking for ages that I was overrun by Mint Moths (Pyrausta aurata), it is in fact the similar Pyrausta purpuralis (no common name). When I ID'd this I used the same info and yet really decided that it was the Mint Moth(I think the fact that they lived on my Marjoram was one). The key point is that the Mint Moth has fewer gold markings on the wings, with a single distinct gold spot on the forewing.... and this seems to have more than that

Yes, this one looks a little plainer. The common name according to UK Safari is Common Crimson and Gold Moth
BUT, I've just done some more looking and seen loads of shots that DO make this the Mint Moth... so either it's not as simple as that or people are all misnaming!

The sites I first looked at didn't have common names, and I only hunt had for the ID rather than the common name... Damn - now I have to look hard at the common names too - it's hard work identifying stuff!!!!

Me too, Joe - even when you eventually find what you think it is, there's a damned good chance that it isn't
