Another difficult one - I'll take a stab at a Cirl Bunting - Emberiza cirlus

OK, so I'll try a different one - even if it's just to make Louise seem clever

What about a female Reed Bunting - Emberiza schoeniclus?

[BTW, Crister, maybe there's something about Rolf that we didn't know...

But (she hastily adds, showing respect for the Webmaster), 'I really don't THINK so!']

I can't argue with that Catherine - it was one of my possibilities.... I have a list of them (so, you're going to have to work harder to make me look clever)

But I HAVE been working hard, Crister!

Now, I thought at first that it looked like a Finch (because of the beak), but it didn't look like any I knew, so I followed Louise in the Bunting direction - but it doesn't really match any of those either - at least not the common ones here...

    So I'm lost!

    R-O-L-F! Help!

The patterning down the breast that almost makes lines, makes it look like a Lapland Bunting (Calcarius lapponicus), although the face looks a little plain. Still, I'll take a stab at that.

Looking at the black under the breast, it would appear to be a Dunlin - Calidris alpinia.

Nope, not a name used in the UK, Rolf isn't that common, probably more Ralphs about, something I often get called.

    Among other things no doubt!

['Rolf' is more 'continental' perhaps, though 'Ralph' is definitely very English.

Both are rare north of the Border!]

Anyway, Rolf/'Roffe', remember that the next bird ID is mine!

    OK, 'Crissy'!

I'll start with - a Black Tailed Godwit, in summer plumage (though the beak doesn't look long enough....) - Limosa limosa
