It looks like it may be an Owl of some sort, was put off at first by the setting.

Looks like a Tawny Owl to me
(Strix aluco - Linnaean, or 'Hoolet' in Scots!)

But then, there are SO many different Owls, aren't there?

Yes, but there aren't many with vertical bars down the side of their heads. In fact I think their's only one in our part of the world, the Hawk Owl, Surnia ulula.
