As for the other 'Rising Sun' Rolf, I have a picture of it in my 'vaults' that I took for a themed photo comp. It was 'song titles', so it was of course The (public) house of the rising sun, with a subtitle of some of the lyrics that seemed to fit with the man looking back over his shoulder "...it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one ".

This has been in Exmouth for about 12 years and was standing at the bus stop out side Aladdin's cave (shop) when I suddenly remembered. I't is round the back in an alli way so very difficult to photograph. I had to use my phone.
And here it is.

Yes. The bloke who had it done was ordered to have it removed because it is an advert for his shop but he didn't as the previous owner had a lovely Karate mural up there (10 time nicer) as he owed the shop then and ran Shotokan karate club in the space above the shop so there it stayed

This art was on a building (ice house or net shed?) on Mallaig harbour.

How wonderful - I love the way that they haven't forgotten that small bit of wall at the very top. It has an interesting style, a bit like those industrial Art Deco paintings but with a modern edge.
Because we no longer pass stories on by mouth, I think that we should have more murals telling the local stories, and anyway, big blank walls could always do with a bit of interest

It tells the story of the fishing industry in Mallaig - one of Scotland's most famous fishing towns.

Here are a couple of pics to add to the story. The first shows a harbour view. The second, the Skye ferry ready to set sail with a lovely white statue and the sunshine on Skye behind it. (It was a gloomy half hour off the train on the whole, with rain in Mallig, but sunshine showing on the mountains of Skye made up for it!)

Wonderful - although I have to admit that I'd not heard of the place **Louise hangs her head in shame**. I love the look of small fishing towns, although I find it weird that they can look so cosy and cute.. whilst hosting a very dangerous industry. It reminds me of a hymn I used to like as a kid about sailors/fishermen - I am now wracking my brain trying to remember it, but I can't for the life of me. It mentions a lantern guiding them home, but that's about it..... I hate having such a bad memory!

Never mind, Louise! You've heard of it now!

Pronounced Mallaig, it's the terminus of the West Highland Railway line, the stretch from Fort William to there being named the most beautiful railway line in the world by many. The line passes over the Glenfinnan Viaduct (of 'Harry Potter' fame) and the beaches of Arisaig and Morar ('Local Hero' and 'Highlander' locations) and in summer it hosts 'The Jacobite' steam train.

You can also take a ferry to Armadale and other places in Skye.

I am almost sure now that the painted building is actually a smokehouse. In the 60s and 70s it was the main herring port for all of Europe, and its smoked fish were world famous.
