The dome of Darwen Tower in Lancashire blew off in the gales last night - complete with its wind vane....

Oh, I DO hope they fix it, Ross!

I's such an amazing weather vane to start with, but with all that history behind it deserves to be replaced - more securely too!

It's a lovely thing - I'm sure that they will find the funds to sort it.

Back down in my home area of Staffordshire for a few days last week. Whilst I was out and about I spotted this rather nice example at Longdon near Stafford

Two really interesting weather vanes, Ross, - the first because of what it is, the other because of where it is!

Love that foghorn too. Is it still used - in the days of greater technology like sat navs, etc.? I think the 'Troon Coo' stopped sounding some ago.

(You must get to Arnamurchan to see the lighthouse and foghorn there some day. Something special - not to mention the view out to sea!)

Having introduced you all to assorted foreign vanes over the last couple of years I managed to find a solitary Cyprus example whilst we were away on our Easter break. Not a very exciting example but as we dont have any Cypriot pics yet I thought Id add it anyway

Weather vanes dont seem to be a traditional addition to any buildings out there - I suspect this house belongs to one of the many British expats resident.

Absolutely, Ross! I wonder if other countries use the N, S, E and W lettering anyway?

(That type of building is becoming more popular in gardens here. Sheltering folks from the sun and allowing views of the garden all round, these 'see through' structures are great for smaller gardens too as they don't appear as a 'block' in a smaller area. I love them!)

Nice one Ross, wonder how many there are on the island. About the lettering Catherine, hadn't noticed when in France, but will have a look, as it should obviously be slightly different.

In London close to Regent Street, Bunting for the Royal Wedding in front of St James' Church Piccadilly, which was design by Sir Christopher Wren. It's not that exciting, but I loved the shot with the bunting in front of it.

    That's really interesting, Rolf!

So we need some from Greece, Russia, China, etc. next.

I would be willing to do that research. Would the site pay for my ticket?

This one has a story behind it. Its located at an old level crossing on the Selkirk branch line. This line closed to passengers in 1951 but lasted until 1964 before final closure and lifting.

The people living in the crossing cottage now have put a small reminder of the locations history back

Theres the wind vane which is a rather nice garden ornament and a station type clock.

Looks like there will be a happy ending to the Darwen Tower story - repairs were due to start a few weeks ago, with local companies offering to do the work for the cost of the materials:

Nice one at the old station Ross, also good news about the Darwen tower, only been there once, but it is such a great landmark.

Spotted on a garage roof whilst pottering around the Lancashire lanes last weekend. I would say the MMIX (2009) was the building date of the detached garage as it looked very new

Nice one Ross, I Guess the first two letters are the owners' initials, but what about the C-M I wonder.

    Nigel and Jennifer Chandler-Mills perhaps.

Some more from around the North Pennines.

Two deer themed ones, and a sad and very battered one from Kirkhaugh church near Alston. The thin spire is very strange - apparently the church builder had holidayed in Germany and liked the church spires there!

Love the deer ones - and the other one IS a bit sad - yes, but at least the 'W' is still there, so you can guess the rest!

Most of the ones seen around Kranjska Gora were cockerels, which seems to be a regional symbol as many signs had a cockerel on them as well.

A few more - this time the first one is from Ljubljana and the last 4 are from Kranjska Gora.

The yellow place with the horrible name (pronounced Slashchichana near enough) was a cake shop & 4 large coffees, and 2 large slabs of home made strudel gave us change from €9!

(The third and fourth pics are the same vane)

Its quite obvious that they commonly use N S & W but use O for the East cardinal point.

I like the pic with the red roof and the mountains behind it.

Slovenia is absolutely beautiful, if you like a quiet resort with walking of all levels I can highly recommend Kranjska Gora - we did over 60 miles walking in our 2 week break, not bad for 2 folks who spend most of our working lives behind desks...

Certainly some crackers there Ross, interesting that the letters on the vanes don't correspond to the Slovenian language, but I guess that NSEW are pretty much international for shipping.

    Nice ones there, Ross!

What is the first one? Is it a yacht?

Ah the one on the green tower at Ljubljana city hall. Not sure to be honest - I dont seem to have a good shot of it. I'll have a look at Carol's pics.
