Default Caterpillar - spiny & brown!

I haven no idea what this is - have been looking for a while but can't see him on the net, any ideas anyone? It was on my lettuce.

I reckon that it must be a moth as I really haven't seen anything but white butterflies in the garden, and it's not one of those.

What a fantastic capture.Usually when I attempt close up shots it needs to be something that moves very slowly or not at all(that sounds a bit like me actually)

Nice photo, difficult to find a good resource for caterpillar identification, this page is OK. http://www.whatsthiscaterpillar.co.uk/plates.htm

Another resource, but no easy reference guide. http://www.back-garden-moths.co.uk/forum/index.php

DIgidark.... this didn't move at all even when I pushed some of the greenery aside. I have to admit that a lot of my closeup photos are a little too shaky to put up! Even worse, when I get down to take a photo I am not always sure if I am going to get up again!

Been trying to check this out, but it is very difficult to match, another possible option may be the Muslin Moth caterpillar. Will keep looking.

I agree a Buff Ermine Moth

At least that looks like the piccy in my book which I highly recommend
It is Collins Complete British Insects by Michael Chinery and there are chapters on Moth and Caterpillar moths.ISBN 0-00-717966-9
    Hope this helps
