This is making use of a dead mouse (I've cropped the photo for the sake of the squeamish!).
Apparently the male and female work together to bury a dead creature to provide food for their larvae. That would explain a lot as there was a lot of movement under the mouse which seemed to be too much for one beetle...but I only ever saw one at once so it didn't dawn on me that there might be more than one. How they were going to bury a whole mouse, I don't know!
The greenbottle were also in attendance, but thought that I would crop them out. You all know what they look like!!
