The true lemurs, or Lemuridae, are one of the five families commonly known just as lemurs. Like all other lemurs, those in this group live on, and only on, the island of Madagascar. They evolved in near isolation after Madagascar split away from the African mainland and, importantly, away from competition with other primates.
