Default ID Needed - Maiden Erleigh pond Reading

    Hi All!

Went for a walk around Maiden Erleigh pond today before the rain started and saw a water bird I'd never seen before. Sorry, no pictures

It was slightly smaller then a mallard and moved quite fast in the water. It was white with a black and white striped head. The head almost looked like a small herons head.

During the walk I noticed Mandarin/Wooduck female/juveniles (can't tell the difference!) and it was very different to these.

    Any idea?

Couldn't perhaps be a Great-crested Grebe juvenile Chis?

No problem Chris, love that little lake, not been down there for a while though. I would guess that the reed beds are quite well established now?
