In the summer of 1953, five English men and 1 woman on 2 Triumphs, 2 Sunbeams and 1 Brough Superior with side car set out on their annual vacation through Europe and the Alps ( through France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria)

They stayed in St. Moritz also and the way they were dressed riding motorcycles ( no helmets of course), and stopped regularly to make tea, so British. Do take the time to read and see all these pictures.

Some fascinating photos and a great story, Chris!

I've never had (nor ever wanted) a motorbike, but remember those Triumphs well. (I actually had a Triumph car - but the company no longer exists.)

My first out to France was in the summer of 1963, when I went camping down in Menton with a college friend and her family. The pictures on that site show that little had changed in the 10 years between their being taken and our visit.

And yes, you don't need to be English to take afternoon tea at a roadside/campsite in France. All of us Brits do, and that's how I met my Dutch friends for the first time. Like all other Europeans - they found that habit fascinating, and came over to join in!

We're still friends nearly 50 years on and see each other every year - either here or in The Netherlands. You see, the afternoon tea habit is one we British have learned to use to effect over the years. I am sure it has been deployed to avoid many diplomatic incidents as well!

[BTW, two bits of info.... this museum is just round the corner from us, less than a mile from our house - Sammy Miller Museum, New Milton The finest collection of fully restored motorcycles in Europe
and, Frans, the younger of the two Dutch brothers we met in France all those years ago has just bought himself a second Harley Davidson for his 65th birthday. The first was bought just over a year ago after going on a motorcycle trip on such a bike through the Grand Canyon!]
