They certainly take it very seriously, this was on the main gravel pit at Theale.

Males of the species are always seeking a fight.
Was that a nice, quiet, gentle female looking on?
It most certainly was Catherine. It was all over fairly quickly and it was quite funny watching the vanquished male heading off across the lake at full speed with head nearly touching the water and wings in aerofoil mode.
And they have such long pointy beaks, too - ouch! Did they make a lot of squawks or was it just splashing... or was it too far away to hear
