I guess it got its' name before the more modern usage of the term "bonking"

Nope, it's a very recent addition as a common name common name for the Common Soldier Red Soldier Beetle (Rhagonycha fulva) which is often seen in pairs doing what comes naturally.. and often on Hogweed
