(How do you know it's a male, Beryl? I was told by one expert that it was possible to ID male or female through their 'brow lines'... then I was told by another that was rubbish!)

Yes . The female has a 'v' shaped brow (bit like a widows peak)

Well I can only go by a book I have and of course if it is windswept on a windy day it would be hard to tell I guess.

This is what is says on BGB;
The sexes are very similar, if not identical, though some texts suggest that the brown forehead is "V" shaped in females, and "U" shaped in males, though even this is not always apparent.

That now seems to be a subject of debate apparently, Beryl.

- The main thing is that the birds know which is which I guess!

Ys. But I think (but am not saying for sure as I'm no expert but I do watch bireds a lot ) IMO. The females are Orange and the males are red and when in breading plumage the males go a vivid red

I have also uploaded a photo of a (Me thinks) a female with a prominent 'V' and she is Orange
