Default European Hornet - Vespa crabro

So, there I was at my computer with the cat on the window-sill in the sun, when I heard her rattling the ornaments. She doesn't normally do that so I knew that she must be after something. I looked up to see this almost 1.5 inch-long beauty at the window.
First I grabbed the cat and threw her out the room then I 'contained' it. Unfortunately, the thing I have to do that with is a battered plastic thing so I wouldn't be able to get a good shot - so.... out came the cheese dome
Anyway, for obvious reasons they are not as good as I would like, but I'll only go so far for you lot.....

Excellent shots, despite the cheese dome Louise. I remember following one in France last April and was struck by the deepness of their buzz.

Unfortunately this thing was quite laid back, so no buzzing. I was under the impression that they were rather angry, but having seen this one and having looked them up, apparently they aren't unless you threaten their nest... which is fair enough.

Of course, Alan, you're right - that angry little buzz of a Vespa - can't miss it
