    I think that these are amazing looking creatures - I would expect to see them in a sci-fi film, the second one in particular as it looks like black armour

    .. but I haven't managed to narrow them down to exact type. I thought I had it but the legs weren't quite the right colour (which is why I left the more open name ).

    To quote bugguide.net "Ichneumonids are notoriously hard to identify: aside from the sheer number of species, there are numerous cases of distant relatives that appear almost identical. Any identification based solely on comparing images should be treated as suspect unless an expert has said there are no lookalikes for the species or group in question." .. so I suppose I might as well go ahead an post it
