Yes it is - most Icelandic beaches are black due to the erosion and deposition of volcanic material - British type yellow sand is exceedingly unusual, and only found in a handful of locations.
Yes I thought so. You can find Black sand in New Zealand to . obviously due to the volcanoes there.
Heres two pics clearly showing the erosion of the black materials. The lakeside one is Iceberg lake on the south coast, and the glacier pic shows the immense amount of crud the glaciers shift.

Nice captures Ross, yes, they do carry a lot of debris.
