Taken at Martin Mere not exactly sure what it is
It looks like a Marsh Sandpiper with the sun shining on his beak.
I could be wrong
Just had a look though my Birdguides DVD ROM and it looks like a Buff-breasted Sandpiper Tryngites subrficollis.
Classified as a vagrant.

I could tell it was a sandpiper. I wasn't sure which one though there are quite a few.
Well I may be wrong, but it was the only one which appeared to fit all of the characteristics.
And it does have a buff breast too. so I would agree with you
The common sandpipers are all beginning to arrive here now
any of those you suggested would be a brilliant tick!!! as they are not common at all..... it is a ruff and these are regularly seen at martin mere.
Ah, thanks Andy, missed out the Ruff, as the Birdguides only shows the Female in the fourth picture and it is significantly different from the male.
